Living in Houston
The diverse city of Houston thrives on variety. Politics, the economy, multiculturalism, the arts and education are all passionately embraced by city leaders and residents alike. The Bayou City is constantly changing and evolving as a world-class leader, while remaining true to its Texas roots.
Houstonians work hard and play hard. The city is home to the Texas Medical Center, the largest medical center in the world, which employs 52,000. Industries like shipping, energy, biomedical research and aeronautics also drive the city's economy. Future workers can get an education at one of more than 40 institutions of higher learning in the metro area.
H-Town celebrates its diversity and love of the arts nearly every day. The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is the largest rodeo in the world, attracting more than 1.8 million visitors each year. The city's 17-block theater district is second only to Broadway in New York. In fact, Houston is home to eight performing arts organizations with more than 12,000 seats.
With average temperatures in the 90s for most of the year, Houston is a hotbed of outdoor activities and active lifestyles. Discovery Green and Herman Park both preserve large swaths of green space, inviting joggers, bikers and weekend athletes to hit the pavement or golf course.
As Texas' largest city, Houston offers an abundance of shopping and retail options, from the world-renown Galleria with its 375-plus stores, to the bargain shopper's paradise known as the Harwin Shopping District.
If you love to eat out, Houston's your kind of town. Residents there dine in restaurants more often than any other city dwellers in the U.S. Stately neighborhoods like River Oaks and the funky Museum District are just a few of the many neighborhoods that give Houston its "small town in a big city" vibe.
